The MIC of seven antimicrobials (ampicillin, erythromycin, roxithromycin, clindamycin, tetracycline, minocycline, nadifloxacin) against P. acnes was under 3.13 micrograms/ml. There were very few resistant strains of P. acnes, but many of S. epidermidis.

The susceptibility patterns of P. acnes isolates implicated in deep-seated infections have been less well characterized. Medical management of PJIs without surgical intervention has been considered to result in poorer clinical outcomes [ 1, 28 ]. Such a limited approach has typically been reserved for patients with inoperable status [ 1, 6 ].

Design This was a prospective cross-sectional study. The susceptibility patterns of P. acnes isolates implicated in deep-seated infections have been less well characterized.

P acnes susceptibility

P. acnes is usually susceptible to a wide range of common antibiotics, although some, particularly in acne patients, have been found to be resistant to clindamycin, erythromycin and tetracyclines. 12 Despite their susceptibility, they are sometimes remarkably difficult to eradicate, and long courses are often recommended.

Antibiotic susceptibility patterns of P. acnes isolates in relation to severity of acne, age of the patients, disease duration, and previous antibiotic therapy Antibiotic susceptibility patterns of P.acnes isolates revealed insignificant differences between sensitivities to antibiotics in all grades of acne (table 2). As regards The variability in P. acnes susceptibility to clindamycin argues for routine antimicrobial susceptibility testing for clindamycin and other antibiotics. CONCLUSIONS:Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of P. acnes should no longer just be confined to the research laboratory but expanded and incor - porated into routine microbiological evaluation of P. acnes. 2018-02-01 · Cutibacterium acnes is a commensal skin bacterium, regularly implicated in prosthetic joint infection, particularly of the shoulder. Diagnosis has been improved by progress in bacteriological techniques: longer culture time, liquid medium culture, MALDI-TOF mass spectrography, and universal 16S rRNA PCR, associated by some authors to sonication of ablated implants. Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of antimicrobial susceptibility, biotypes and phylotypes of clinical Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes, formerly Propionibacterium acnes) isolates as well as the relationship among demographic factors, C. acnes biotypes and phylotypes.

We used the potent hemolysin produced by Aeromonas hydrophila, called aerolysin, to induce hemolysis and determine if hemolysis had any effect on antibiotic susceptibility.5 A. hydrophila is a wild-type isolate from a leech collected from Ellicott Creek, Williamsville, NY, in 2002.

2013-04-29 · Orthopedic surgeons at our institution have noticed an increase in the number of infections due to Propionibacterium acnes, especially following operations on the shoulder. We collected P. acnes isolates from our hospital microbiology laboratory for 1 year and performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing on 28 strains from the shoulder.

Results Propionibacterium acnes was isolated from 98 patients. P. acnes blood isolates were considered significant if two or more separate blood culture sets were positive on the same day and if systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) was present without any alternate explanation; that is, patients had to be shown to have at least two of the following four criteria: (i) body temperature of >38.0 or <36°C, (ii) heart rate of >90 beats per minute Susceptibility tests were performed by the broth microdilution method.

Resistance to azithromycin and clindamycin was associated with acne severity (p =0.01 and p =0.03). Resistance to clindamycin was also statistically significantly higher in patients with a history of antibiotic therapy or concurrent antibiotic therapy during the study (p =0.04).

Although P. acnes can cause a number of conditions such as folliculitis, sarcoidosis, and endocarditis, especially in postoperative patients with implanted medical devices, the most publicized connection to disease is in the skin condition known as acne vulgaris, which afflicts up to an estimated 80% of adolescents in the United States. Despite the susceptibility of local C. acnes isolates to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, in northern Mexico, 68 percent of C. acnes isolates were resistant.7 Minocycline had the lowest resistance rate reported in literature from Europe and the rest of the world, while the highest rate was observed in Korea (10%).9 Table 8 summarizes the percentage of C. acnes isolates resistant to different antibiotics in Malta and those reported in other countries outside Europe.
